Interesting Facts

Since ancient times, the drum has been used as a signal instrument, as well as to accompany ritual dances, religious ceremonies, military processions and actions, such as walking, running, pulling, rowing or beating in a coherent manner. For example, as far back as the ancient Greeks and Romans, the tympanum drum (Greek τύμπανον), the predecessor of modern kettledrums, was used in the cults of Cybele and Bacchus, as well as in the army and in the rowing fleet. And so on, for example, in the sixteenth century drums were used in the British Army in the infantry, dragoons, and cavalry. In Henry VIII’s time there were two drummers in each company of 100 men. In the 17th century the main drummers’ signals used were “Attention”, “Line up”, “Ready”, “March”, “Attack”, “Retreat”.
